Performance-Tracking System
1.) Which capabilities of the
information systems have been employed in this application? How?
Ø
The
tracking system project was led by Shafto’s executive assistant, Vincent
Ficcaglia – a user himself. The system was implemented with the user-friendly W
Software produced by Comshare. The performance tracking-system includes 13 screens
displayed on Shafto’s workstation.
Ø
Is
the study of complementary networks of hardware and software that people and
organizations use to collect, filter, and process, create, and distribute data.
2.) If you were Robert Shafto, what
information about the agent’s work would you consider critical and want to
obtain from the system?
Ø
Critical
to most information systems are information technologies, which are typically
designed to enable humans to perform tasks for which the human brain is not
well suited, such as: handling large amount of information, performing complex
calculations, and controlling many simultaneous processes.
Ø
To
implement a system for tracking performance of its 3,700 agents located at
ninety (90) sites around the United States. These agents sell a wide variety of
financial products and services.
3.) Suggest additional capabilities of
information systems that may be used to enhance the system.
Ø
The
performance tracking system has become a prototype for an executive information
system that today sees Robert Shafto the current president of the New England
and other top executives of the life insurance and financial services company.
Ø
System
intended to help decision makers compile useful information from a combination
of raw data, documents, and personal knowledge, or business models to identify
and solve problems and make decisions.
4.) What organizational effects would
you expect from the new system?
Ø
An
agent who sells more is selling to more clients are simpler task selling more
to existing clients. Using computer and people who are working in the company
is essential to carry out some or all of its planned tasks and to speed up the
services. Information technology workers could then use these components the
hardware, software, database, network and procedures to create information
systems that watch over safety measures, risk and the management of data.
5.) This system appears relatively
simple and generic. In what other settings might you use a similar system?
Ø
It
is Generic because we had a lot of data stored as a product of transactions
also a lot was stored in the PC’s and was not integrated not to mention what we
have on paper. The system use to support business or organizational
decision-making activities.
6.) Who was driving this project, MIS
professionals or end-users?
Ø
MIS
– management information systems driving this project these are the role of
management data warehouses, enterprise resource planning, enterprise systems,
expert systems, geographic information system, and global information system
and office automation.
7.) When do performance – tracking
system stop being productive because the information is not timely? Do you
consider, for example, the time horizon (a month) appropriate for the task at
hand?
Ø
For
example if the information technology worker is always late they have to
monitor your performance time to time not a month to measure what salary you
can get if always late of course they deduct you a lot it depends of your time
you waste.
Ø
The
success of an insurance company depends largely on the performance of its
agents. To control this performance, the company needs to establish measurable
expectations and check the agent’s performance records against these
expectations.
8.) What role does this system play in
the balance of power in the firm? Is it conceivable that a system of this type
could be implemented to enhance the power of a manager?
Ø
Performance-Tracking
System has implemented to their agents and/or technology information workers to
sell a wide variety of financial products and services.
Ø
The
role of system is to provide information to management which all enables them
to decisions which ensure that the organization is contributed.
9.) What do you think of the title of
article from which the case was drawn? Is it accurate? Why or why not?
Ø
Performance-Tracking
System is accurate yes! Because workers with specialized technical knowledge
and strong communications skills will have the best prospects. Workers with
management skills and an understanding of business practices and principles
will have excellent opportunities, as companies are increasingly looking to
technology to drive their revenue. And also it describes our exercise no.1
quite related to the information system.
